As we draw ever so close to 2018, I still can’t believe, and I know I’m not the only one, how time flies. Our lives and work move at an unprecedented pace, it’s astounding!  I know end of the year always brings  an onslaught of emotions, and you just can’t help but take the time to look back at the year you had and let it all sink in….

As a Solopreneur or an Entrepreneur, especially, you might be way too busy with your workload to spare some time, or perhaps feel that its not relevant to your buisness; but you’d be surprised! In the wise words of Margaret Wheatley

“Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.”

Reflection plays an important role be it in your personal life or in business the act of actually re-evaluating all your actions and seeing where you went wrong and where you got it right is more important than you might think.

Today I’ll be sharing with you why reflecting on your goals is so important, and give you few simple questions that will guide the process. This will be a two-part blog which covers your business and personal life. So, make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss out on next week’s post.

So before we start I would first like to congratulate you! It wasn’t easy but YOU made it!!

Re-Assesing & Re Evaluating your goals

Hindsight is always 20-20, as they say, so why not take advantage of this and enter the New Year armed with lessons learned from the previous year’s mistakes or even achievements, who says you only learn from mistakes?

The purpose of these guiding questions is to give you a few, clear and simple, questions that can help your reflective process go smoothly. However depending on the nature and stage of your business feel free to tweak or add on to the questions, so you can maximize the benefits.

So get that list out

And go back to what your goals were at the beginning of the year and ask yourself the following questions:

1. Have your goals changed or stayed the same, if so why??

When planning your business goals, more often than not they will change, with time, because while trying to achieve them you might run into unforeseen obstacles or learn better ways to get to that coveted end goal, be it gaining more followers, higher engagements on social media, or even increasing traffic to your site.

Something else to consider, if they have changed, is have they changed too much that you’re  now even farther than where you saw yourself initially? It’s easy to get swept up with the tide of day to day functions and trying to grow your business, that you lose sight of your ‘WHY’.

2. What was your biggest challenge of 2017 and how did you overcome it?

This is a particularly important question to ask yourself because it shows how you managed to tackle a problem(s), (the bonus, too is it’s a big confidence booster because in case you forgot what a bad-ass you are this is the perfect time for a little reminder). As much as we learn from our mistakes, we should pay attention to what works!

So dive back, go through your records (hint hint: If you can neither remember nor find accurate records, then there’s an obstacle right there!) and figure out what some of your biggest challenges were.

As a start up you may find that the lack of structure, limited resources and constant change, to name a few, the list goes on and on believe me, can be daunting but if you look back you will find that you have overcome some form or another of what I’ve mentioned.

Bask in that knowledge and let it give you the boost you need for an even better 2018!

This form of Entrepreneur Self Assessment  helps you understand how best YOU work, thus making changes where necessary.

3. Speaking of mistakes, what mistakes have you made in terms of your business? And what led to you making those mistakes?

If you’re just starting out I bet you probably have a lot of stories to share, so don’t be shy.

This in particular can be a bit difficult to process as soon as it happens, that’s why one of our favorite #GirlBoss  Maria Forleo an Entrepreneur and online business coach, had this to say on the subject of analyzing your mistakes “Hindsight isn’t just 20-20, it’s often thick skinned”.

The idea behind that quote is that, at the end of the year, when you’re “reviewing” yourself you’re able to get what she calls “A 30,000ft view” that will help you find a deeper understanding of what went wrong so you can prevent it (to the best of your abilities that is) from happening again.

Objectivity is also important! It’s human nature to beat yourself up once you make a mistake that’s why a little distance goes a long way in learning from mistakes made during the year.

I hope you found these tips useful, and are on your way to having an awesome and productive reflection session (i should just quit and be a rapper LOL!) and an even more successful 2018!!

Being an entrepreneur is ALL about being patient and determined, add some fun and by doing what you love and you have yourself a recipe for success, so remember :

  1. Have your goals remained the same or changed?
  2. What was your biggest challenge(s) & how did you overcome it/them?
  3. What mistakes did you make and how did you learn from them?

PLEASE don’t forget to share your thoughts and opinions and lets have a conversation!!! So until next time #Girlboss, rooting for you always!!
