See this beautiful lady, fumbling around her handbag, about to get run over because she ran out of her house 5 minutes before work starts? – This used to be the story of my life. Please don’t be this person. I’ll tell you right now that this rat race life in 6-inch heels is NOT cute! What we all need is a tried, tested and proven Girlboss Morning Routine!
It’s no secret that building and growing a business comes with it’s own dose of stress and overwhelm, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t beat the struggle. Having an effective morning routine is the secret behind the sanity of most successful people in this world, and it’s about time that you get on board. If the likes of Oprah, Marie Forleo and Barack Obama swear by their morning routines, then that’s what we are going to do too.
Now, it’s all nice and well that all these amazing people are dedicated to their morning routines but the real question is what are the benefits for you? Thought you’d never ask, here you go…
Benefits of a Girlboss Morning Routine:
1. Get Your "Me" Time
Think about it, we rarely get much time during the day to focus solely on ourselves, which is partly why, as a society, we are always stressed. If you wake up a little earlier everyday, you will have precious time just for yourself. No interruptions, no noise, no outside world, just you. Imagine the satisfaction you would experience for the rest of the day, knowing you already took care of your most important asset, yourself.
2. Set the Momentum for the Rest of the Day
If you wake up rushing and scrambling to fit the pieces of your life together then chances are that the rest of your day will follow the same pattern. By having a morning routine, you set the tone for the rest of the day. If you’re calm and organised in the morning, then nothing can shake you and you’ll just find yourself slaying your To-Do list left, right and centre.
When you wake up earlier and go through your routine, you will be able to plan your day more efficiently and set your priorities straight. A busy day is so much easier to get through when you know exactly what you need to do and when, which lowers the risk of getting run over unlike the nice lady in the photo. With a morning routine, you can declutter your mind and get crystal clear with your goals, Bosslady!
4. Mood Stability
Yup, having a good morning routine can actually stabilise your mood for the rest of the day. Some of the exercises that I’ll tell you about below will help you feel more grounded, patient and emotionally stable throughout the day. You will also experience less anxiety, which is always a plus!
5. Perfectly Even Winged Eye-liner
Seriously, if you have more time in the morning, you will get to work looking like the Goddess that you are because you actually took the time to get ready. This may not be very important for some people but there’s some research that points to a positive correlation between productivity and the way you dress. Obviously, this doesn’t mean that you need to break bank on designer clothes, you could pull a Steve Jobs and wear the same T-shirt everyday, but no one can deny that he looked put together.
Okay, I get it, so what should be my morning routine?
Before I get sued, gotta give credit where credit is due, you know. The morning routine I will be talking about is inspired by Hal Elrod’s book, “The Miracle Morning” and it has. changed. my. life. and a bunch of other people’s lives, according to YouTube! Now, I’ve adjusted a few things, specifically the order of steps, to make the routine more realistic and convenient so that it’s easier to stick to. The key with any routine, like most things, is trial and error so try different things until you find one that is effortless for you. Of course, you can stick to the original routine but you can also be extra like me and add your own flavours!
So let’s jump right in…
Step 1 - Silence or Meditation
The goal of this step is calm your mind, relax your body, and let go of your stress. The moment my alarm goes off in the morning, I dive straight into meditation to observe my thoughts and develop a deeper sense of peace, purpose and direction. Most mornings, I do this right on my bed – because I’m lazy like that. If you have never practiced meditation before then I recommend the free app, Headspace, which guides you through purposeful meditation and also explains why you’re doing what you’re doing – makes the whole thing less weird.
Of course, if you don’t want to meditate, then try sitting in complete silence to be present in the now and to understand your thoughts. Another alternative would be to pray and practice gratitude for all the amazing things in your life. Do you, but be present.
Step 2 - Morning Scribbles
Step 1 helps you get a better understanding of your thoughts but now you need to employ the power of putting pen to paper and actually, write down your thoughts. If you don’t already journal everyday, get on it! Pull out your journal and scribble everything that you’re thinking. You’ll be surprised how much clearer your life will be once you put the chaos in your head on paper. I like to do this while having my morning coffee and that makes it all so much more exciting!
Beyond thoughts, I like to add a section where I write down just 3 main goals that I would like to achieve for the day. I normally group my To-Do list according to these goals so that I have a bigger picture of what I need to do instead of laboring away on tedious tasks that I honestly do not want to do. Step 3 - Exercise
In the original “Miracle Morning” routine, Exercise was the last step. I don’t know about you but if I don’t get right to it, my brain comes up with very convincing excuses to skip working out. I found that I am more likely to exercise if I do it right after I get done with clearing my thoughts. Besides, you will see how the next steps work much better after working out.
So, it’s the 21st century, which means that you already know the benefits of exercising. Do it! Do it as often as you can. Do it for you, for your health, for your goals and for your happiness – yes, exercise releases endorphins that give you a ‘high‘ feeling and who doesn’t want to start their day on a high? On that note, you don’t need a gym membership or a whole hour to work out, you can do simple exercises for 10 minutes to get your heart pumping and you’re good! For some inspiration and workout routines, YouTube is your friend!
Step 4 - Visualization
Everyone does this differently. Some people use vision boards and others kick back with good ol’ imagination. I use a mix of both. The key is to get crystal clear with your goals and what your ideal day or life looks like. What do you want to achieve? What does that look like? What do you look like? How do you want to feel? This one is very important. In order for visualization to be effective, you need to associate emotions to the things you want.
I like to visualize in the shower. I just let my mind wander to all the places I want to visit, all the smiles that I influence and all the success I want to achieve. Doing this sets the tone for the rest of the day because then, I always remember what I am working towards. Getting crystal clear with your goals will also help to raise your vibration so that the universe can deliver what you want, girl!
Step 5 - Affirmations
Affirmations… they’re weird. But they work. Affirmations are positive statements that you say out loud to affirm your potential and re-wire the limiting beliefs that have been stopping you from achieving all those amazing goals. Your affirmations should remind you that you are fully capable of smashing your goals and slaying the day! Nothing can stop you except you.
Right after I shower, this is when I chant my affirmations. It’s good to have some daily affirmations easily accessible. I have written my affirmations on my bathroom mirror so that I can say them out loud while I get ready for work. Doing this always raises my confidence and forces the Negative Nancy in my head to take a seat!
Step 6 - Reading
It’s always a good time to learn something new, Girlboss. I can even go as far as claiming that there is no better time to learn something new than at the start of your day.
I am a total bookworm so I spend about 15 minutes every morning reading at least one chapter of a self-development book (sometimes more) while having my breakfast. You don’t have to read a whole chapter, even if you only read a page a day, you’re better and smarter than you were yesterday. If you don’t like reading, then give self-development audiobooks or podcasts a try and you can even listen to them while commuting to work.
HOW TO STICK TO YOUR MORNING ROUTINE
If you follow these steps, I promise that you will notice major spikes in your clarity, productivity and happiness throughout the day! I’m not even kidding. I used to be the cliché “not a morning person” until I gave in and read this book after a lovely friend recommended it. I loved this routine so much that I wish a woman wrote it, but alas, I added my own zest so that makes me sleep better at night (Just Kidding, but not really).
So if you’re having trouble focusing on your goals or if you’re under the snooze spell, then this routine might just be your WAKE UP call – pun intended!
Of course, even though you now know how beneficial this routine would be for you, sometimes, waking up early just feels like “winter is here” and you’re waking up over the wall. I get it. So here are some bonus tips to help you wake up earlier and stick to your routine.
- Put your phone or alarm clock as far away from your bed as possible. I even go as far as placing my phone under the carpet across my room so that I actually have to bend down to turn the alarm off.
- Lighten your cognitive load by planning the small things the night before, like putting out your clothes (including your workout clothes) and prepping your breakfast.
- Play some energetic “pick-me-up” music! Right after meditation, I play some fun, motivational songs. You can put together your own playlist or check out this Spotify playlist, which was designed specifically to get you up and excited in the morning!
