Are you an ambitious Girlboss with a dream of building an online empire? Or maybe you are in a job that you’ve outgrown, working 9 to 5, but feel like you can do more? Or something better and different that’s aligned with your purpose? Well, stop thinking and go for it. It is never too early or too late to start your own business, more specifically, an online business.

Female entrepreneurs are slowly, but surely reclaiming their place in society and in business and I for one, am seriously thrilled that women’s empowerment is not just a theoretical campaign anymore. We are living the campaign. We are the movement. According to a research study done by Womenable, there are at least 9.4 million business firms owned by women in the United States – and we’re not yet talking about the entire world.

Women are rising and the world is realising that our drive, determination, compassion, creativity and fierce multi-tasking bring a whole new ball game to the entrepreneurship table. As young millennial women with the desire to travel, explore and live beyond any boundary ever forced upon us, while earning a Chanel-worthy income at the same time – we have the ticket to financial freedom right at our fingertips. You guessed it – online business. All you need is Wi-Fi and a dream so let’s take a look at a few reasons why going online is the new black.

“Every woman that finally figured out her worth, has picked up her suitcases of pride and boarded a flight to freedom, which landed in the valley of change.”

– Shannon L. Alder

1. The Digital Advantage

You’re always helping your mom or dad figure out how to operate their new smartphones for a reason. As a millennial, you were born into the digital age, and that places you at a higher advantage than most. How the digital world operates is in your blood, which is why building, launching and running a successful online business is a walk in the park for you. You already have the skills and familiarity with “drag and drop” (how you build a website), “#” (how you grow your following) and “selfies” (how you get personal and build rapport with customers). BAM! You have a fully-fledged business – of course it’s not the simple but you get it.

Think about how often you’re on your computer or phone. Instead of binge-watching Netflix or YouTube, you could build a website – and you don’t have to leave your bed to do it. If you’re already spending half of your existence on Instagram anyway, which I’m sure you are, why not post about your business and make cash money in the process?

Here’s one thing I want you to think about; when Instagram launched “stories,” how long did it take you before you posted your first story? When Facebook launched the “Live” feature, how long before you were tuned in sending hearts during a Live video? Probably, within the week. The point is that you, millennial Girlboss, are very adaptable to changes in the digital world. This means that you’ll be way ahead of majority of the businesses out there because you can incorporate new tech upgrades into your online business without even trying too hard. Your business will have a competitive edge simply because digital is your playground.

2. Digital Nomad

Pearl white sands, crystal-clear waters and a pina colada vs. stuffy cubicle and stale coffee – which one wins?

One of the many, many perks of having an online business is being able to claim your office anywhere your heart desires. The laptop lifestyle is the new way of working and it doesn’t matter how many times millennials are accused of being “entitled,” 9-5 is just not cute anymore, not for our vibe or our skin. So excuse us if we would rather LIVE than make a living.

3. Feed Your Soul

Starting an online business allows you to do what you LOVE. If you are a fashion enthusiast, for example, landing even a small position at a fashion house is tough. However, with digital innovation and your pre-established savvy tech skills, you could be the next Sophia Amoruso.

Girlboss, life is too short to be stuck doing anything, and I mean ANYTHING that doesn’t make your heart smile on the inside. Going online could be the perfect opportunity for you to create all the awesomeness that’s bubbling up inside you. It’s honestly unfair to keep all that awesome sauce from the world! #patientlywaiting

– Marc Anthony

4. Side-Hustle

I know you’ve probably heard the “Do what you love” advice so many times before and you may be thinking, “Sure, of course I would do that if I was Bill Gate’s daughter!” #sarcasticsmile

The truth is that a lot of women can’t just quit their job tomorrow and start their own business because, well, adulting… But that doesn’t mean you can’t start. Another great reason for taking your biz online is the chance to join the infamous “Side-Hustle” gang. You can start building your online business while working full-time. All you need to do is prioritise like a G and dedicate even just two hours a day to working on your dreams – I know you have two hours.

Most world-renowned female entrepreneurs started their online businesses as a side-hustle, because they were probably working full-time jobs and/or raising kids at the same time. The point is it’s totally doable – and it’s affordable. You can buy a domain and start building a website today for less than $100, which is nothing compared to setting up a physical business. This way, you’re able to chase your dreams almost risk-free. The beauty of an online business is that you can start small and grow as your business grows. Before you know it, you’ll be saying sayonara to your 9-5 and saying hello to CEO.

5. Global Reach

With the power of social media at your fingertips, there are no limits to your customer base. We have such a great opportunity right now because a business can go viral with the simple swipe or tap of a finger. There are a million different ways to engage your followers on social media by simply documenting the things that you’re already doing all day!

For example, you can post your “Day in the Life of an Entrepreneur” on Instagram stories and get 1000s of followers with the right hashtags! The best part of it all is that you don’t have to do it yourself. That’s the point of being “social,” your tribe will share your brand and posts for you. Can you imagine being able to impact people from all over the world just by putting out your awesome sauce? (#stillwaiting) This, Girlboss, is the dream.

Making money online has had a bad rep for the last few years, no thanks to ‘get quick money scams’ that promise you’ll be a millionaire by adding links on Google. Seriously though, do you want to be a millionaire tomorrow? One day, yes, from doing the things that you love and not by breaking your fingers from copying and pasting a million links. But, you have to start now! #nopressure

Remember that the crucial period of any business is when you’re just starting. If you have a great business idea and it’s been mulling over in your head for a while, just take the first initial steps and go from there. It’s even easier starting online because all you have to do is buy a domain and pay for hosting, then take the next step from there. If you don’t have a business idea yet, but you know that you want to have an online business of some kind, then start by figuring out your purpose in life (FREE WORKBOOK when you sign up!)

The point is to just start. The only thing that’s holding you back is not lack of resources, or knowledge or time – it’s fear. All you have to do is put on some red lipstick and your big girl digital pants, and look this fear right in the eye and wink – because you know that YOU ARE GOING TO BUILD THAT EMPIRE!
